FCT poll: APC agent laments overvoting in Kuje as collation continues
An APC agent has raised concerns about alleged overvoting and manual accreditation during the ongoing collation of election results in Kuje, Nigeria.
The ongoing election collation in Kuje Area Council, Nigeria, has been marred by controversy as Haruna Jatau, an agent for the All Progressive Congress (APC), contested the results presented by the collation officer, Zubairu Mohammed. Jatau claimed that in two polling units within Gudun Karya Ward, the number of votes cast exceeded the number of accredited voters, particularly alleging issues in Zagabutu village and Huni village where voting procedures were reportedly breached. The APC has formally rejected the election results from this ward, citing these irregularities as justification.
In response to the APC's claims, the collation officer defended the election results, asserting that the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) was implemented correctly in accrediting voters across the ward. Mohammed mentioned that a polling officer in Huni had faced pressure from local party loyalists which led to erroneous reporting of results; however, he asserted that the results were later corrected to align with the data provided by BVAS. The situation remains tense as discrepancies in reporting highlight the challenges faced during electoral processes in Nigeria.
Abubakar Dambo, the Resident Electoral Commissioner overseeing the Kuje elections, expressed his discontent with the cancellations and the controversies surrounding the polling results. The incident reflects ongoing issues of electoral integrity in Nigeria, especially as accusations of malpractices such as overvoting and unauthorized manual accreditation undermine public confidence in the electoral system. As the collation progresses, the situation in Kuje could have wider implications for the legitimacy of the election outcomes across the region.
