Midwest MG deviates from and falls short of the schooling target of elementary education met in 2022 and 2023, says IBGE

In 2024, the Midwest region of Minas Gerais slightly deviated from the schooling target for elementary education, having previously met the goal in 2022 and 2023.

The Midwest region of Minas Gerais has reported a slight deviation from the educational enrollment targets set for children aged 6 to 14 years in 2024, despite having achieved universal schooling for this age group in 2022 and 2023. Specifically, while the region had reached a 100% enrollment rate in the previous two years, it has regressed to a 99.9% enrollment in 2024. This data comes from the Continuous National Household Sample Survey (PNADC) conducted by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), emphasizing the challenges and fluctuations within the educational sector despite previous successes.

Moreover, the education targets under the National Education Plan (PNE) have been in effect since 2014, focusing on increasing access to education for all children and adolescents across Brazil. The current PNE was established under Law 13.005/2014 and was extended until December 31, 2025, by Law 14.934/2024. While the Midwest region has slightly fallen behind in elementary education, it has consistently met the required indices for secondary education since 2016, indicating a better performance in this category.

The importance of these findings reflects broader educational trends in Brazil, highlighting both achievements and areas needing attention. The fluctuations in enrollment rates could impact future policy measures and funding allocation, as stakeholders seek to maintain or improve the enrollment figures and ensure all children have access to quality education. The continued monitoring of these educational metrics by IBGE will be critical for assessing the success and challenges within the country’s education system.
