Zona da Mata achieves schooling targets for Primary Education and exceeds index for Secondary Education, says IBGE
Zona da Mata has met its basic education enrollment targets ahead of schedule, according to the IBGE.
In 2024, the Zona da Mata region of Brazil has successfully met the schooling goals for children aged 6 to 14, which encompasses the Primary Education level, set by the National Education Plan (PNE) a year ahead of the deadline. This achievement aligns with national educational goals and demonstrates notable progress in the region’s educational landscape. Additionally, the region has been compliant with the Secondary Education targets since 2017, indicating a sustained commitment to enhancing educational access for older youth.
The data comes from the Continuous National Household Sample Survey (PNADC) conducted by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), with findings released in December 2025. The PNE, which is in effect and was established by Law 13.005/2014, was set for the decade from 2014 to 2024 but has been extended until December 31, 2025, as per Law 14.934/2024. These timely achievements reflect broader national educational policies aiming to elevate educational standards Across Brazil.
Despite these advances, the report highlights a significant gap in education for younger children aged 0 to 5 years, who fall under the Early Childhood Education category. This is indicative of a continuing challenge for the region, as it works towards comprehensive educational inclusivity. In addition to tracking enrollment numbers, the study also addresses literacy rates, portraying a multifaceted picture of the educational progress in the Zona da Mata region and the ongoing efforts needed to support younger learners.
