Triangle and Alto Paranaíba exceed school enrollment targets in high school and have the lowest illiteracy rate, says IBGE

The Triangle and Alto Paranaíba regions in Brazil have surpassed high school enrollment targets and achieved the lowest illiteracy rate in history according to IBGE statistics.

The Triangle Mineiro and Alto Paranaíba regions of Brazil have recently surpassed educational enrollment targets set for high school, particularly among adolescents aged 15 to 17. This achievement is significant as it reflects a broader trend towards increased educational attainment in these areas. In addition to high school successes, the regions have also marked a notable decrease in illiteracy rates among individuals over the age of 15, reaching a historic low according to the latest data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

The data, which is detailed in the Annual Continuous National Household Sample Survey (PNADC), covers a historical series from 2016 to 2024 and was released in December 2025. Despite these accomplishments in high school education, the regions still fall short of the enrollment goals set for early childhood and elementary education, as outlined in the National Education Plan (PNE) established by law in 2014 and extended to 2025. The government aims to improve educational outcomes across all levels, yet challenges remain in reaching these foundational stages of education.

As Brazil focuses on educational reforms and improvements, the successes in Triangle and Alto Paranaíba may serve as a model for other regions. However, the lag in enrolling younger children in early education and in elementary schooling highlights an area of concern for policymakers. Continuing efforts will be necessary to ensure that these areas not only maintain their high school achievement but also address the shortcomings in earlier educational stages to promote a more educated populace overall.
