Fire in Kaunas apartment building staircase forced evacuation of 26 people

A fire in a stairwell of an apartment building in Kaunas, Lithuania, led to the evacuation of 26 residents and two pets during the night.

At approximately 2:17 AM, a report of a fire was received from an apartment building located on Piliakalnio Street in Kaunas. The caller indicated that there was smoke in the stairwell, prompting a rapid response from firefighters. Upon arrival, rescuers found that the stairwell and areas on the 7th to 9th floors were heavily smoked. In total, 26 residents and two pets were evacuated to ensure their safety while the situation was assessed.

Firefighters took immediate action by opening windows to ventilate the smoke-filled stairwell. The fire, which was caused by a stack of papers piled in a corner on the 5th floor, was extinguished before the firefighters arrived. This quick response prevented further damage and ensured the safety of the building's inhabitants. After the smoke was cleared and the environment was deemed safe, residents were allowed to return to their homes.

As a result of the incident, approximately 1 square meter of the stairwell walls suffered smoke damage. Local authorities have initiated an investigation into the cause of the fire to prevent future occurrences and improve safety measures in public housing.
