Blowing snow may worsen visibility on roads - traffic operator: "At least ramps and intersections are slippery"
The Finnish Meteorological Institute warns of poor driving conditions nationwide due to snow, blowing snow, and warming weather.
The Finnish Meteorological Institute has issued a warning for poor driving conditions throughout Finland due to heavy snowfall and warming temperatures that cause blowing snow. The adverse weather conditions are expected to impact traffic flow, reduce average speeds, and increase the risk of accidents. As the temperatures rise, moisture is accumulating on the roads, which can freeze and create a hazardous ice layer, according to Ossi Riikonen, a traffic operator with Fintraffic's Tampere traffic center.
Ossi Riikonen further elaborated on the current road conditions, stating that although the air temperature is hovering near zero, there is still a significant amount of frost on the road surface, making salting ineffective at this time. Motorists are advised to exercise caution, especially in ramps and intersections that are expected to be particularly slippery. Despite the challenges posed by the weather, Riikonen reassured that with normal driving practices, it is still possible for drivers to navigate safely.
The combination of blowing snow could diminish visibility in certain areas and contribute to road slipperiness, potentially leading to more hazardous conditions. As the weather continues to fluctuate, it is essential for drivers to remain vigilant and respect the unpredictable road conditions to ensure their safety and that of others during this challenging weather event.
