Driving conditions poor in large parts of the country – some traffic accidents reported
Driving conditions are poor across much of Finland due to snow and blowing snow, with some minor traffic accidents reported.
Today, Finland is experiencing adverse driving conditions in many areas, as reported by the Finnish Meteorological Institute. Warnings have been issued for poor to very poor driving conditions, particularly in southern and central regions of the country. The ongoing snowfall, coupled with blowing snow, is contributing to these hazardous conditions, with the snow currently moving towards Eastern Finland.
As of 8 AM, the Road Traffic Agency reported several instances of vehicles leaving the road, although no major accidents have occurred. Traffic levels remain relatively low as many road clearing operations are still in progress on main roads. The difficult conditions have led to a cautious approach among drivers, emphasizing the need for vigilance when traveling.
Moreover, today is expected to see a lull in heavy return traffic following the winter holiday in Southern Finland, as a significant amount of return traffic occurred yesterday. This reduction in traffic volume may help mitigate some of the risks associated with the poor weather conditions as drivers return from their holiday activities and navigate the challenging road conditions safely.
