IITA urges FG to prioritise Nigeria’s seed yam value chain

The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture urges the Nigerian government to prioritize the seed yam value chain to improve productivity and market opportunities.

The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) has called on the Nigerian Federal Government to enhance its support for the seed yam value chain during the National Yam Advocacy Summit held in Abuja. Dr. Tahirou Abdoulaye, the Deputy Director-General of IITA, emphasized the importance of this sector as yams represent Nigeria’s most valuable food crop. He highlighted that developing a strong seed system is essential for ensuring the availability of improved seed varieties, which can significantly increase productivity and market prospects for farmers.

During the summit, which focused on 'Catalysing a National Agenda for Yam Value Chain Transformation through Improved Seed Technologies', various strategies to modernize yam production were discussed. Abdoulaye pointed out that a well-functioning seed system will not only help in disseminating better seed varieties to farmers but will also facilitate growth in processing and export opportunities. The focus on yam production is critical, as there is a growing demand for quality yams, particularly from Nigerians living abroad as well as markets in the Caribbean.

Overall, enhancing Nigeria’s seed yam value chain could play a significant role in boosting the economy by improving food security, increasing farmers' incomes, and fulfilling market demands. Investing in improved seed technologies and supportive policies will ensure that farmers can benefit from these developments and help position Nigeria as a leading yam producer, aligning with the country’s agricultural goals.
