In a recent statement during the 2026 budget defense session in Abuja, the Nigerian Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Aliyu Abdullahi, outlined the Federal Government's dedication to expanding food production and improving the sustainability of the food system. This initiative is aimed at achieving food security in Nigeria. Abdullahi highlighted that while there are ongoing efforts in food security, challenges such as funding limitations, high input costs, and structural obstacles facing farmers continue to pose significant hurdles.

Despite these challenges, the Minister pointed out that Nigerian farmers remain resilient and committed to production, citing government surveys that indicate slight increases in output. Abdullahi stressed the importance of continuing investment in agriculture to sustain and enhance these gains, noting that approximately 30 percent of the capital allocations for 2025, amounting to roughly ₦18 billion, have not yet been disbursed. This lack of funding could hinder the progress necessary for stabilizing food production in the country.

The Minister's remarks underscore the critical need for strategic interventions to address the root causes of the challenges faced by farmers. By tackling these structural issues, the government aims to boost agricultural productivity, which is essential for achieving food security and supporting Nigeria's growing population.
