Nigeria: Govt Distributes Post-Harvest Equipment to Farmers to Cut Waste, Boost Rural Jobs, Others

The Nigerian government has initiated a distribution of processing and post-harvest equipment to farmers in Nasarawa State to reduce waste and enhance rural employment.

The Nigerian Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, has launched a campaign to distribute processing and post-harvest equipment aimed at supporting farmers in Nasarawa State. The initiative is part of the government's effort to tackle post-harvest losses, promote enterprise growth, and create more job opportunities for rural communities under the Value Chain Development Programme (VCDP). This comes as part of a targeted strategy to empower women and youth in agriculture, fostering greater competitiveness and productivity within the sector.

During his 2-day visit, Kyari emphasized that the strategy is a collaborative effort with the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and focuses on strengthening the rice and cassava value chains. The provided equipment is expected to enhance various stages of agricultural production, including processing and infrastructure, ensuring that market access is improved for farmers. This detailed intervention aligns with national agricultural technology initiatives aimed at modernizing and increasing efficiency in Nigeria's agriculture.

The distribution of these vital resources is seen as an essential step in overcoming structural challenges that have long hindered Nigerian agriculture. By investing in equipment and technology, the government's approach seeks not only to alleviate waste but also to boost rural employment significantly, thus impacting the livelihoods of farmers and contributing to national food security.
