Rain causes landslide, bridge collapse, and flooding in streets and houses in the Jundiaí region
Heavy rains in Jundiaí, Brazil, have led to significant structural damage, including a landslide and the collapse of a bridge.
Severe rainfall in the Jundiaí region of São Paulo, Brazil, caused a landslide during the early hours of Sunday, leaving five people homeless after part of a wall collapsed on their house. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported. The Civil Defense has temporarily closed the residence to assess the damage and to mitigate any potential risks. Although the local authorities offered shelter, the affected residents chose to stay with neighbors instead.
In addition to the landslide in Jundiaí, the region experienced another weather-related incident in Itupeva, where 90 millimeters of rain fell overnight. This intense rainfall resulted in the opening of a large crater on a bridge connecting two neighborhoods, posing a significant danger to motorists. A vehicle passing over the bridge was partially engulfed, highlighting the hazardous conditions caused by the heavy rain. The Civil Defense is monitoring the situation closely, making inspections in affected areas to ensure safety measures are being implemented.
This incident underscores the increasing vulnerability of urban infrastructure in the face of extreme weather events, raising concerns about preparedness, response capabilities, and the adequacy of existing drainage systems. As climate change continues to affect weather patterns, residents and local governments must work together to develop effective strategies to mitigate the impacts of such natural disasters in the future.
