Ch. Doukas: "We continue intensively with the planting program" – 500 new trees at the Ilissos Grove
The municipality of Athens has planted 500 new trees in the Ilissos Grove to enhance green spaces in the city.
The municipality of Athens is advancing its initiative for a greener city with a new tree-planting effort at the Ilissos Grove, supported by the 'SYNESIS - SOURCE' non-profit organization. On February 17, the city planted 500 new trees at strategic locations within the grove, reaffirming its commitment to enhancing the quality of life for residents and visitors alike. Mayor Haris Doukas expressed pride in this initiative, emphasizing how it rejuvenates an area that is in dire need of greenery.
Deputy Mayor of Environment and Greenery, Georgios Apostolopoulos, highlighted the importance of the Ilissos Grove as a vital green space within the urban framework. He noted that the tree planting today restores a section of the grove where older trees had been uprooted due to extreme weather conditions. By introducing new species of trees, the initiative seeks to bolster biodiversity while revitalizing the area for public enjoyment and environmental health.
This tree-planting project is part of a broader commitment by the Athens municipality to increase urban green areas, which is a critical response to climate change and urban pollution. Such efforts not only enhance the ecological footprint of cities but also improve mental and physical health for their inhabitants, thereby creating a sustainable living environment.
