H. Doukas: We continue at full speed, so that the brown bin reaches every neighborhood in Athens
The expansion of brown bins in Athens is progressing, with a recent distribution event taking place in the 1st Municipal Community.
The initiative to expand the network of brown bins for organic waste collection is underway in Athens, with recent efforts focused on the 1st Municipal Community. On March 18th, residents of Koukaki gathered to receive their 10-liter household brown bins during a distribution event, which was aligned with Global Recycling Day. Mayor Haris Doukas highlighted that since the beginning of their term, 12,000 households have engaged in the program, which aims to reduce the amount of organic waste that ends up in landfills.
Mayor Doukas emphasized the importance of educating residents on the proper use of these brown bins, ensuring that they are effectively used for organic waste recycling. The initiative not only seeks to promote environmental awareness among residents but also strives to enhance overall waste management in the city. Alongside Doukas, Deputy Mayor for Cleanliness and Recycling Olga Dourou underscored that recycling is pivotal for achieving a sustainable future free from unnecessary environmental burdens.
As Athens continues its efforts to implement sustainable waste management practices, the introduction of brown bins is a crucial step towards encouraging recycling and reducing waste overall. The program aims to expand across all neighborhoods, ensuring widespread participation among residents and fostering a community-oriented approach to environmental responsibility.
