Storm causes damage and leaves city in the Northwest of RS without electricity, says Civil Defense
A strong storm in Palmeira das Missões, Brazil, caused significant damage and left parts of the city without electricity.
A severe storm struck Palmeira das Missões, located in the Northwest region of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, on Thursday afternoon, resulting in considerable destruction and power outages across the city. The Civil Defense reported that the storm began around 5:45 PM, accompanied by strong winds that uprooted trees, damaged public squares, and affected numerous residences.
Witness accounts described scenes of devastation, with branches littering the streets and significant interruptions to electricity supply. By 7:23 PM, it was reported that residences and public buildings had been damaged, and numerous sports gyms had suffered impacts as well. Additionally, the storm obstructed various streets within the city, complicating access for emergency services and residents alike. At least seven other municipalities in the region also reported similar damage due to the storm's impact.
In response to the storm, the Civil Defense and Fire Department revealed that more than 300 families had requested protective tarps to safeguard their damaged homes by 8:30 PM. As the situation unfolds, local authorities are likely to face ongoing challenges in restoring services and providing assistance to affected residents, particularly as cleanup efforts begin in the wake of the storm's aftermath.
