Storm Causes Total Blackout in Five Cities in Greater São Paulo
A severe storm has led to a total blackout in five cities in the Greater São Paulo region due to transmission line failures caused by high winds and heavy rainfall.
On the night of Friday, the 13th, a total blackout affected the cities of Franco da Rocha, Francisco Morato, Caieiras, Mairiporã, and Cabreúva in the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo, impacting approximately 545,844 residents as per the 2022 IBGE census. The blackouts were caused by failure in a transmission line, which the power supply company ISA Energia Brasil attributed to strong rainfall and gusty winds that accompanied the storm.
In response to the outages, ISA Energia Brasil has mobilized teams in collaboration with the local energy distributor, Elektro NeoEnergia, to restore power and identify the root cause of the issues. Reports of downed trees and flooding throughout the region indicate significant weather-related disruptions, leading to multiple traffic blockages and the necessity of road closures for safety and clearance efforts.
The situation highlights the vulnerabilities of urban infrastructure to extreme weather events, with power supply reliability being critically tested. Communications from Neoenergia confirm that they are actively working to resolve the situation and restore normalcy as quickly as possible amidst ongoing weather challenges, emphasizing the importance of infrastructure resilience in the face of climate variability.
