Storm tears off roofs, floods roads, and knocks down walls in Paraná
A storm in Paraná caused significant property damage, including flooding, uprooted trees, and roof damages, but no injuries were reported.
A severe storm struck Paraná on the afternoon of March 17, leading to extensive property damage, including flooded roads, uprooted trees, and roofs ripped off buildings. Particularly hard hit was Campina Grande do Sul where strong winds damaged a warehouse, impacting parked vehicles beneath it. Fortunately, the storm did not result in any injuries despite the significant material damage reported across the region.
The hydrological station in Campina Grande do Sul recorded 55.4 millimeters of rain in just 15 minutes, amounting to nearly 20% of the total expected rainfall for the month. Local authorities from the Civil Defense are currently assessing the situation, mapping areas affected by roof damage and fallen trees. Reports indicate that parts of the BR-116 highway, which connects the city to Curitiba, experienced water accumulation due to the heavy rainfall, prompting the responsible concessionaire to monitor safety on that route closely.
In addition to Campina Grande do Sul, other areas such as Londrina in northern Paraná also experienced damage due to the storm. The widespread impacts of this weather event illustrate the vulnerability of local infrastructure to severe weather, highlighting the need for improved storm preparedness and response measures in the region.
