Parking maneuver is no longer mandatory for category B in Piauí starting Thursday (19)

The state of Piauí in Brazil has removed the parking maneuver requirement for candidates seeking a category B driver's license effective Thursday, allowing more leniency in the evaluation process.

Effective Thursday (19), the State Department of Transit of Piauí (Detran-PI) announced the implementation of a new practical exam manual which alters the requirements for obtaining a National Driver's License (CNH). One of the significant changes involves the elimination of the parking maneuver test for candidates applying for a category B license, which allows for the operation of light passenger vehicles. Now, candidates will only need to demonstrate their driving skills on public roads during the practical exam, while the parking maneuver requirement remains in place for other vehicle categories.

In addition to the omitted parking maneuver, another key change is the adjustment of the failure criteria during tests. The allowable number of errors has been increased from four to eleven for all categories of driver's licenses. This change aims to make the evaluation process less stringent and to reduce the number of candidates who fail the exam, thereby encouraging more individuals to pursue their driving licenses without the excessive pressure of a challenging evaluation.

These modifications reflect wider trends in Brazil towards making driver training more accessible, potentially leading to higher rates of licensure in Piauí. By easing some requirements, state authorities hope to facilitate safer driving practices among new drivers, although some may argue that these changes could undermine the quality of driver education in the region.
