Dry Law reduces by 44% the number of alcohol-related incidents in traffic in Manaus during Carnival, says Detran-AM
During Carnival 2026, Manaus witnessed a 44% decrease in positive alcohol tests among drivers, according to Detran-AM.
The State Department of Transit of Amazonas (Detran-AM) has reported a significant 44% decrease in alcohol-related tests during Carnival 2026 in Manaus. Conducted from Friday, February 13, to the morning of Wednesday, February 18, the 'Dry Law' operation focused on testing drivers across all zones of the capital. Over 12,000 motorists were tested, revealing that a total of 214 were found to have consumed alcohol, a notable drop from the 381 cases identified during the previous year's Carnival.
In addition to the reduction in positive alcohol tests, the enforcement efforts also uncovered a myriad of traffic violations. Detran-AM disclosed that 332 irregularities were identified during the operations, which included a range of dangerous practices such as driving without a license and riding motorcycles without helmets. Furthermore, 22 vehicles were removed from the roads due to safety concerns, highlighting the comprehensive approach taken by authorities to ensure road safety during this festive period.
This reduction in alcohol consumption and proactive enforcement reflects the effectiveness of the campaign aimed at curbing drunk driving in Manaus. Such initiatives are crucial during high-traffic events like Carnival, which can lead to increased road accidents if not properly managed. The results underscore the importance of sustained efforts in public safety initiatives to maintain and improve the well-being of the community during festive seasons.
