PRF: AL registers one death and over 70% drop in accidents during carnival compared to 2025
Alagoas experienced a significant reduction in traffic accidents during Carnival 2026, with only one fatality and four accidents reported.
During Carnival 2026, Alagoas witnessed a remarkable decline in traffic incidents, recording just one death due to a traffic accident, alongside four accidents that resulted in six injuries. These figures indicate a decrease of over 70% in serious accidents compared to the same period in 2025, as reported by the Federal Highway Police (PRF). This substantial drop highlights improvements in road safety measures or increased enforcement during the festive season.
The PRF conducted frequent inspections between February 13 and 18, engaging with around 2,000 individuals across nearly 1,500 vehicles, and performing over 1,300 breathalyzer tests. Although this data presents a promising outlook for road safety during the carnival period, the PRF has noted that these figures are preliminary, as final validations and consolidations of the data are still in progress. The operation is part of a broader traffic safety initiative termed 'Rodovida', which underscores the importance of road safety.
The 2026 Carnival safety campaign bore the slogan 'Slow Down. Your greatest asset is life', suggesting an ongoing commitment to fostering better driving habits and protecting lives on the roads. This year's statistics may provide a foundation for further discussions on traffic regulations and the effectiveness of ongoing awareness campaigns as authorities aim to continue reducing road fatalities.
