Federal highways in MG register 22 deaths during Carnival, says PRF
The Brazilian Federal Highway Police reported 22 fatalities and 164 injuries during the Carnival 2026 operations on federal highways in Minas Gerais.
The Polícia Rodoviária Federal (PRF) has concluded its 'Operação Rodovia Carnaval 2026' on federal highways in Minas Gerais, reporting 22 deaths and 164 injuries from accidents during the Carnival period. Despite a decrease of 18.4% in accidents compared to the previous year, the number of fatalities increased by 15.7%, raising concerns about road safety during festive periods. The PRF captured over 11,000 speeding violations, while stringent measures were taken against 1,356 drivers for improper seatbelt use and irregular child transport. The statistics for 2026 are still preliminary, as the data requires time for system consolidation. During the operation, a total of 137 accidents were recorded, compared to 168 in 2025, which saw 19 fatalities and 208 injuries. This year’s figures highlight the ongoing challenge of ensuring safety on the highways, particularly during high-traffic events like Carnival. The PRF conducted 13,395 breathalyzer tests, resulting in the apprehension of 373 drivers and four arrests linked to driving under the influence. Such enforcement efforts are crucial in promoting responsible driving behaviors, especially during times when the roads are busier due to festivities. The authorities continue to focus on improving safety measures to reduce both accidents and deaths on Brazilian highways, emphasizing the importance of compliance with traffic regulations.
