Major change at over 30 ABC stations

The S-Group's ABC traffic station chain will implement self-service checkouts at more than 30 stations this year following a successful trial.

The ABC traffic station chain, managed by S-Group, is set to introduce self-service checkouts at over 30 locations across Finland. This decision follows a successful pilot program where data revealed significant consumer behavior changes at these checkouts. Customers tend to make different product choices at self-service kiosks compared to traditional checkout lines, with plant-based foods seeing a 74% higher sales volume at the kiosks.

Jaana Matikainen, the director responsible for ABC's restaurants and stores, noted that the introduction of self-service checkouts allows customers to browse at their own pace, which seems to encourage them to make more thoughtful choices. The increase in demand for specialty products like premium coffees and donuts was also highlighted, suggesting that customers appreciate having more time to explore diverse offerings while shopping.

The usage patterns of these self-service checkouts suggest that they are most popular during peak times, specifically between 11 AM and 6 PM. Interestingly, there is also a noticeable spike in usage during the early morning hours between 4 AM and 6 AM. This innovation reflects a broader trend in consumer preferences towards more personalized and convenient shopping experiences, and it could signify a shift in how retail environments adapt to meet changing customer needs.
