Chrysochoidis: 8 new prisons, Korydallus will be moved to Aspropyrgos - Which cameras are issuing fines

Greek citizen protection minister Michalis Chrysochoidis announced the construction of 8 new prisons amid concerns over overcrowding in existing facilities following a recent murder incident.

In response to growing issues in Greek prisons highlighted by the recent murder of an inmate, Citizen Protection Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis addressed the media, revealing plans to build eight new correctional facilities. He acknowledged that the current prison population is excessively high due to stricter legislation and the poor condition of existing prison infrastructures. The last facility that opened, in Drama, was initiated nearly a decade ago, emphasizing the urgent need for updated facilities.

Chrysochoidis elaborated on the specifics of the new prisons, mentioning that one of them is already in the bidding phase and will be located in Aspropyrgos. The relocation of the Korydallus prison to this new site is projected to be completed by around 2030. This plan aims not only to alleviate overcrowding but also to modernize the outdated prison system that has been a growing concern in Greece.

The development of new prisons is part of a broader reform strategy that seeks to manage the current penitentiary crisis while improving conditions for inmates and staff. With various locations being considered for new facilities, including Filiates in Thesprotia, the government aims to create more humane and efficient systems for corrections, addressing both safety concerns and the rehabilitation prospects for incarcerated individuals.
