M. Chrysohoidis: Prison overcrowding problem β Eight new detention facilities will be created
Greek Minister of Citizen Protection Michalis Chrysohoidis announced plans to construct eight new detention facilities to address severe overcrowding in prisons.
Greek Minister of Citizen Protection Michalis Chrysohoidis has underscored the pressing issue of prison overcrowding in the country, revealing that eight new detention centers are set to be constructed to alleviate the situation. Speaking on SKAI television and referring to the recent murder of a high-profile inmate at Domokos prison, Chrysohoidis emphasized that the existing facilities are strained due to both increased incarceration rates and the aging infrastructure. He noted that the last major prison built was in Drama, operational for just over a year, and largely prepared a decade ago.
In his remarks, Chrysohoidis pointed out that there are numerous questions surrounding the violent incident that will be investigated, with plans to expedite the construction of new prisons as a priority moving forward. The Minister elaborated that funding for the new facilities has already been secured, enabling rapid commencement of the projects to improve prison conditions and manage inmate populations more effectively.
Additionally, he announced that electronic monitoring will soon be implemented as part of the corrective measures, which includes the use of electronic wristbands for inmates. This proposed solution aims to relieve pressure on overcrowded prisons without compromising security, reflecting a shift towards utilizing technology in monitoring offenders as part of modern correctional practices.
