When Malmbanan Can Open for Traffic Again
Traffic on the Malmbanan railway is expected to resume on Thursday at 12:00 after repairs following a freight train derailment.
The Malmbanan railway in Sweden is set to reopen for traffic on Thursday at noon, according to Trafikverket, following a derailment incident that occurred on Sunday night. Two wagons of a freight train derailed near Kaisepakte and Stordalen while the train was switching tracks at a reduced speed, leading to a complete halt of both freight services and SJ passenger trains in the area.
Trafikverket reports that the derailment does not appear to be related to the condition of the track infrastructure. However, the incident resulted in damage to approximately 40 sleepers and a track switch, as well as a broken rail. Crews have been working diligently to repair the damage, and by Monday evening, they had made significant progress, allowing them to estimate a timeline for reopening the railway.
The reopening of Malmbanan is critical for both freight transport and passenger services in this region, and its closure had significant implications for logistics and travel. The incident underscores the importance of railway safety and infrastructure maintenance, as authorities continue to monitor and assess the railways to prevent future disruptions.
