Trains on the Malmbanan will start running again on Thursday

Trains on the Malmbanan railway line in Sweden are set to resume operation on Thursday following an incident where two freight wagons derailed.

The Malmbanan railway in Sweden experienced a derailment incident involving two freight wagons late Sunday night while switching tracks at low speed. According to the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket), there is no indication that the derailment was due to the condition of the track infrastructure. Rescue efforts on Sunday evening successfully lifted the derailed wagons back onto the tracks for removal.

Following the recovery, railway workers assessed the damage caused by the incident and reported that approximately 40 sleepers, one track junction, and a section of rail had sustained damage. Simon Sunna, a unit manager at Trafikverket, provided a press release stating the condition of the tracks and the extent of the damage, emphasizing the quick response by personnel who arrived on-site to evaluate the situation.

Material for repair is now on its way to the accident site, with restoration efforts expected to be completed by noon on Thursday. Once repairs are finalized, train services between Kiruna and Narvik will recommence, allowing for the restoration of key transportation links in the region, important for both local and economic activities.
