Derailment on Malmbanan – halt in train traffic
A derailment on the Malmbanan railway has halted all train traffic, primarily affecting freight services, and no timeline for resumption has been provided yet.
A derailment occurred on the Malmbanan railway, according to Sweden's Trafikverket, during a switch operation with the train traveling at a lower speed. The incident involved damage to approximately 20-25 sleepers, a switch, and a rail break, as reported by Anna Lindahl, a maintenance unit manager for the northern region. Personnel were on-site overnight to survey the area and initially assess the damage to the railway infrastructure.
Currently, Trafikverket has not given any estimate on when train services could resume, with the suspension primarily impacting freight transportation. This disruption represents a significant operational challenge given that the Malmbanan is a crucial route for transporting goods in the region. Cleanup and recovery efforts are expected to begin as soon as possible following the accident, including the deployment of a crane truck to remove the two derailed train cars.
Meanwhile, impacted Train 94, which operates between Kiruna and Narvik, has been cancelled and replaced by bus service. The continuation of services will depend on the assessment of the damages and the effectiveness of the cleanup operations, highlighting the importance of the Malmbanan railway for linking various regions for both passenger and freight transport.
