PTAC imposes a 5000 euro fine on Liene Porīte for selling unlicensed travel services on Facebook
The Consumer Rights Protection Centre (PTAC) has fined Liene Porīte 5000 euros for unlawfully offering travel services related to the 'Breakfasts in Tuscany' project on Facebook.
The Consumer Rights Protection Centre (PTAC) in Latvia has issued a 5000 euro fine to Liene Porīte for violating tourism laws by selling unlicensed travel services. This action stemmed from her systematic promotion of a project titled 'Breakfasts in Tuscany' on Facebook, where she offered travel packages primarily to Italy that included multiple services such as accommodation, transportation, and guided activities. Such offerings are classified as comprehensive travel services, which legally require a tour operator's license and necessary financial security to protect travelers’ deposits.
The PTAC highlighted that this constitutes a breach of both the Tourism Law and the Law on Prohibition of Unfair Commercial Practices. In addition to the fine, Porīte has been mandated to cease any unfair commercial practices immediately. The regulatory body emphasized the importance of adhering to legal frameworks designed to protect consumers and ensure fair competition within the travel industry, underscoring their commitment to uphold these standards.
Previously, the PTAC had issued several reminders to service providers regarding the need for acquiring proper licensing for these types of tourism services. This case serves as a warning to others in the industry about the serious implications of ignoring licensing requirements and engaging in unfair commercial practices, emphasizing the need for diligence among operators offering travel packages.
