PTAC imposes a 5000 euro fine on a woman for offering unlicensed travel services
The Consumer Rights Protection Center (PTAC) in Latvia fined a woman 5000 euros for offering unlicensed travel packages on Facebook, requiring her to cease her unfair commercial practices immediately.
The Consumer Rights Protection Center (PTAC) in Latvia has imposed a fine of 5000 euros on a woman for offering unlicensed travel services under the project "Breakfasts in Tuscany" on the social media platform Facebook. The PTAC found that she was systematically promoting travel packages mainly to Italy, which included various services such as accommodation, transport, breakfasts, walks, and sightseeing activities, all of which qualify as a complex tourism service. Offering such packages requires a licensed tourism operator in Latvia, along with financial provisions to protect travelers' deposits.
Despite multiple requests from PTAC for the service provider to obtain the necessary special permit (license) and ensure insurance coverage or bank guarantees to protect travelers' deposits, these requirements were not met, and the offers continued without the appropriate legal status. Furthermore, the PTAC received a complaint from a traveler regarding a canceled trip, highlighting the risks faced by consumers without proper regulatory oversight in the travel sector.
This ruling underscores the importance of regulatory compliance in the travel industry in Latvia, as it aims to protect consumers from unregulated practices and ensure that travel services meet legal standards. The PTAC's actions serve as a reminder to all service providers that adherence to licensing and financial protection requirements is mandatory to operate legally and safeguard consumer rights.
