In one day, fires claimed the lives of five people
Multiple tragic fires across Lithuania have resulted in the deaths of five individuals over a span of just one day.
On early Monday morning, a fire in Šakių district, Maštaičiai village, led to the discovery of the charred body of a man born in 1965, after the blaze was extinguished around 5:56 AM. Later that evening, another fire in a farm building in Vilnius district, Naujasėdis village, claimed the lives of two unidentified individuals whose remains were found after the fire was put out around 10:57 PM. The tragic events continued into Tuesday, when another fire at a house in Širvintos, Ramių Street, resulted in the deaths of a man born in 1954 and a woman born in 1965, with their bodies also found after the fire was extinguished at about 1:50 AM.
The frequency and severity of these fires in Lithuania have raised significant concerns, prompting authorities to initiate pre-investigations to determine the cause of these tragic incidents. Over the past weekend, further tragedy struck Trakai district where two more individuals died in similar circumstances. Reports indicate that nearly 30 people have lost their lives in fires throughout the country since the beginning of the year, highlighting a concerning trend.
Firefighters have identified the leading causes of these fires to include violations and malfunctions in the installation and maintenance of stoves, fireplaces, and chimneys, which account for approximately one-third of fire incidents. This alarming statistic underscores the urgent need for improved safety measures and public awareness regarding fire safety to prevent further loss of life in future incidents.
