Lagos unveils fire marshal club, holds safety walk

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service inaugurated a Fire Marshal Club to enhance community engagement in fire safety and emergency response.

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service has formally launched a Fire Marshal Club aimed at boosting community involvement in fire prevention and emergency response initiatives across Lagos. This announcement was made by the Lagos State Government on Sunday. To kick off this initiative, the Service organized a safety walk, commencing at their headquarters in Alausa, Ikeja, and moving through the Ikeja Fire Station before returning. This walk was not just a ceremonial gesture but a strategic effort to raise awareness among residents about fire safety practices and to promote proactive participation from the community in safeguarding lives and property against fire hazards.

During the event, Controller General of the Service, Margaret Adeseye, addressed the ongoing concerns regarding fire incidents in the state. She provided a sense of optimism by noting a slight decrease in fire incidents recorded between 2024 and 2025, highlighting the effectiveness of community efforts and increased vigilance. Adeseye articulated that while completely eliminating fire outbreaks may be unrealistic, their impact can be significantly reduced through collective responsibility and strict adherence to established safety protocols.

The introduction of the Fire Marshal Club symbolizes a global trend towards fostering community-centric safety systems. Adeseye emphasized that the success of this initiative hinges on the engagement of community members and their willingness to collaborate with the Fire and Rescue Service. By empowering citizens with knowledge and responsibility, the initiative aims to create a safer environment, thus potentially saving lives and minimizing property damage from fire-related incidents in Lagos.
