Suspected bandits attacked the Ugom community in Kaduna State, killing two people and burning the local government chairman's official vehicle during a burial ceremony.
In a recent attack by suspected bandits in Kaduna State, at least two residents were killed, and the official vehicle of the Kajuru Local Government Area chairman was set ablaze during a burial ceremony. The incident occurred on Monday in Ugom community when the attackers opened fire indiscriminately while mourners were gathered to pay their respects. The victims, identified as Bitrus David and Goma Idi, were allegedly targeted during this brutal assault, which sent local residents into a panic as they attempted to flee the scene.
Eyewitness accounts reveal that the gunmen not only assaulted the attendees of the burial but also struck at the nearby Dogon-Noma area. This sustained attack underscored the prevailing insecurity in Kaduna State, where banditry has become increasingly rampant. In the chaos, multiple vehicles were set alight, including those belonging to both the local government chairman, Dauda Madaki, and a local politician, Usman D. Stingo, who was also affected by the violence.
The Chairman of the Ugom Progressive Union, Onnusim Alhaji Ishaya, condemned the attack as a tragic reminder of the lawlessness that plagues the region. As local authorities grapple with the growing threat of banditry, this incident raises concerns about community safety and the efficacy of law enforcement in addressing these violent outbreaks. The challenge of securing rural areas in Nigeria has reached alarming levels, and the cries for more protective measures have intensified among the local populace, seeking safety during even the most sacred occasions, such as funerals.
