Construction of Estonia's largest battery power plant, Zirgu, begins in Tsirguliina

The construction of Zirgu, Estonia's largest battery power plant, is set to begin in Tsirguliina in February 2026, aiming to balance the electric market in Estonia and the Baltic region.

In February 2026, the construction of the Zirgu battery power plant, boasting a capacity of 100 MW / 200 MWh, will commence in Tsirguliina, Valgamaa. This project, led by Diotech OÜ and Transcom AS, represents the largest battery industrial park entirely based on Estonian capital. Its primary objective is to stabilize the electric markets in Estonia and the Baltic region, easing price fluctuations and ensuring reliable electricity supply amidst the burgeoning demand for renewable energy. Mart Moora, a member of the Management Board of Diotech OÜ, highlighted the significance of the Zirgu project for strengthening Estonia's energy system. The urgent need for substantial investments in controllable power and flexible electrical infrastructure is underscored by the rapid growth of renewable energy and the changing security landscape in the region. Moora noted that the plant would enhance system flexibility, reduce price volatility, and support grid stability as the share of renewable energy increases. The Zirgu battery power plant is a crucial response to the growing imbalance in Estonia and the Baltic electricity market. With a notable shift toward renewables, the complex management of the energy system is becoming increasingly critical, necessitating innovative solutions like Zirgu to ensure a balanced and stable energy supply for the future.
