New powerful battery storage systems are being built in Valgamaa and Pärnumaa

New large-scale battery storage systems are underway in Estonia's Valgamaa and Pärnumaa regions, with significant investments aimed at enhancing solar energy capabilities.

In Valgamaa and Pärnumaa, Estonia, substantial investments are being made in new battery storage systems by companies such as Evecon and Diotech. Evecon, based in Pärnumaa, is constructing a powerful battery storage system with an investment of €85 million, while Diotech collaborates with Transcom to establish a battery storage facility in Tsirguliina with a €35 million investment. These developments are part of a broader effort to enhance energy storage capacity in the region, which includes one of the largest solar parks in the Baltics located in Kirikmäel.

The ongoing construction at the solar park in Kirikmäel aims to expand it into a hybrid station, combining solar energy generation with battery storage capabilities. French investment firm Mirova is partnering with Evecon to connect their existing 77.5-megawatt solar park with a new 55-megawatt battery storage system, which will have a capacity of 250 megawatt-hours. This collaboration is facilitated through their joint venture, the Baltic Renewable Energy Platform (BREP), which has commenced the construction of the battery storage system under the supervision of prime contractor WiSo Engineering, with equipment supplied by Huawei.

The hybrid system being developed is anticipated to not only store solar energy but also provide stability to the energy grid in the region. After its expected completion in the third or fourth quarter of this year, the new facilities are poised to significantly enhance the energy infrastructure in Estonia, supporting the country’s green energy transition and meeting its future energy demands more efficiently.
