The South Korean men's short track team qualified for the final of the men's 5000m relay at the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics.
The South Korean men's short track representative team has confidently advanced to the final of the men's 5000m relay at the upcoming 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics. In the semifinal held in Milan, Italy, the team of Lee Jun-seo, Lim Jong-eon, Lee Jung-min, and Shin Dong-min finished first in their heat with a time of 6 minutes 52.70 seconds. The relay event involves four athletes sharing the responsibility of completing a total of 45 laps, and the South Korean team strategically positioned themselves at the back in the early stages of the race. During the race, Lee Jung-min emerged as a standout performer. Although initially running in fourth place, he attempted an overtaking maneuver in the middle of the race, moving up to second place. Lee continued his aggressive tactics by attempting to overtake the leading Netherlands team with 11 laps remaining, which, while unsuccessful, increased the race's pace significantly. With just six laps to go, Lee succeeded in overtaking the Netherlands, allowing South Korea to take the lead and subsequently maintain their advantage, crossing the finish line first with a comfortable margin over their competitors. Historically, the South Korean men's team has had remarkable success in the 5000m relay, winning a total of five Olympic medals, including two golds and three silvers. They secured gold in the 1992 Albertville and 2006 Torino Olympics, and silver in the 1998 Nagano, 2010 Vancouver, and 2022 Beijing Olympics. They are preparing for the finals on the morning of the 21st against the Netherlands, Canada, and Italy, aiming for their first gold medal in twenty years.
