The South Korean men's short track relay team won a silver medal in the Olympic 5000m relay race held in Milan, Italy.
The South Korean men's short track team showcased an impressive performance at the Olympic 5000m relay, securing a silver medal for the second consecutive time. The team, consisting of Lee Jung-min, Hwang Dae-heon, Lee Jun-seo, and Lim Jong-eon, finished the race with a time of 6 minutes and 52.239 seconds, competing against formidable teams from Canada, Italy, and the Netherlands at the Milan Ice Skating Arena. Lee's overtaking instincts and strategic teamwork were crucial to their success, especially as they navigated the intense race dynamics involving 45 laps.
Early in the race, South Korea found itself starting in third place. However, as the competition intensified with 30 laps remaining, the team strategically allowed its competitors to lead while waiting for the right moment to overtake. Their strategy paid off as Hwang Dae-heon provided a powerful boost to Lee Jung-min, enabling him to leapfrog past Canada into third place. With merely 18 laps leftover, Lee showcased his skill by passing Italy, pushing the South Korean team into second as they sought to reclaim the lead.
The finishing minutes of the race were fraught with tension. Although South Korea initially enjoyed a brief lead after Lee’s overtaking maneuvers, they subsequently dropped to third place under pressure from the Netherlands and Italy. Hwang Dae-heon stepped up as the anchor leg, making a decisive move in the final corner of the last lap to overtake Italy, crossing the finish line in second place. The victorious moment was deeply felt as the athletes celebrated their achievement wearing the Taegukgi, the national flag of South Korea, in honor of their hard-fought medal performance.
