The women's 500m barrier has risen... Short track athletes Choi Min-jung, Kim Gil-lee, and Lee So-young fail to win medals
South Korea's women's short track relay team, including captain Choi Min-jung, failed to secure a medal in the women's 500m event at the 2026 Winter Olympics.
The South Korean women's short track relay team, led by captain Choi Min-jung, faced disappointment in their pursuit of a medal in the women's 500m event at the Winter Olympics in Milan. Choi, competing on January 13th, finished 5th in her semifinal heat with a time of 43.060 seconds, which was not enough to advance to the finals. Early in the race, she held the lead, crossing the first lap in 1st place, but soon fell back under pressure from Canadian competitors, ultimately finishing last in her heat.
Alongside Choi, fellow team members Kim Gil-lee and Lee So-young also exited the competition early. Kim finished 3rd in her preliminary heat with a time of 43.373 seconds and did not qualify for the next round, while Lee ended her race in 5th place with a time of 43.330 seconds. This underperformance from the team highlights ongoing challenges for South Korea in the womenβs 500m short track event, marking a stark contrast to their historical achievements in this discipline, where prior medals were earned by Jeon Ki-young in 1998 and Park Seung-hee in 2014.
The failure to medal in this event raises questions about the future competitiveness of the South Korean women's short track team as they prepare for more international challenges ahead. With the next Winter Olympics on the horizon, the team will need to re-evaluate their strategies and performance standards to regain their former stature in the sport, where they have processed a rich history of success in prior years.
