Assault Report by Former Player of Koryo High School, Third-Party Committee Finds Difficulty in Acknowledging Claims; Points Out Issues in School's Response
A third-party investigation into claims of abuse by a former player of Koryo High School's baseball team found insufficient evidence to substantiate the allegations but criticized the school's handling of the situation.
A former member of Koryo High School's baseball team filed a complaint alleging physical and verbal abuse from coaches and fellow players. On the 16th, the school released the findings of an investigation by a third-party committee, which stated that there was not enough evidence or testimony to confirm the claims made by the former player, making it difficult to acknowledge the reported incidents as facts. However, the committee noted that this does not imply that no such actions ever occurred and identified significant flaws in the school's response, including delays in interviewing named coaches and an overall tendency to internally manage issues within the baseball team.
The father of the former player expressed gratitude toward the committee and the school's efforts in the investigation but voiced disappointment in the conclusions, stressing the need to address the closed-off nature of the baseball team culture. Koryo High School's representative indicated an intention to review its organizational structure and the operation of the baseball team based on these findings. The former player had reported incidents from 2023 where he was allegedly subjected to unwanted physical contact by teammates and verbal and physical abuse by coaches.
In a separate incident, the Hiroshima Family Court recently decided not to initiate proceedings against two senior students who were sent to prosecutors for their alleged involvement in an assault on a younger player in the dormitory over a prohibited snack. The case highlighted ongoing issues within the school's baseball program, which had previously faced sanctions from the Japanese High School Baseball Federation for different misconduct, revealing a pattern of behavioral problems that may need systemic reform to ensure student safety and proper oversight.
