Private School in Ulsan Delayed Disciplinary Action Over Sexual Assault Allegations Leaves Victims Distressed
Disciplinary procedures against a teacher at a private school in Ulsan, accused of sexual assault, have been delayed, forcing victims to leave the city due to ongoing fear.
In Ulsan, a private school is facing criticism for the slow disciplinary procedures against a teacher accused of sexual assault. Reports indicate that the principal of the school, identified as G (in his 50s), has not yet faced consequences despite serious allegations from multiple temporary teachers. The Ulsan City Education Office had previously called for G's dismissal and severe penalties for the principal, yet the school administration has not followed through, citing various delays including the recent holiday. According to regulations, disciplinary decisions regarding sexual misconduct should be made within 30 days but have significantly exceeded that timeframe.
Five months have passed since the allegations surfaced, and as disciplinary actions remain unresolved, the impacted teachers have opted to leave Ulsan altogether due to the lack of safety and assurance from the school authorities. One victim shared the emotional distress in a heartfelt statement, expressing fear in resuming normal daily activities and concern that nothing substantial would be done to address the incident. Another survivor pointed out that while the alleged perpetrator operates freely within the school, the victims struggle with even retrieving their belongings, highlighting the urgent need for accountability and protective measures.
On the 26th, the Ulsan Women's Federation held a press conference urging for immediate and stringent disciplinary actions against both the teacher and principal. They emphasized the dire implications of a school environment where victims feel compelled to flee, asserting that such an atmosphere is devoid of future prospects. The federation also submitted a petition with 1,333 signatures demanding the dismissal of the accused teacher to the school's disciplinary committee, calling for swift action and effective measures from education authorities to prevent future incidents.
