Maracatu Opens Carnival in Fernando de Noronha with a Tribute to Women
The Maracatu Nação Noronha kicked off the 2026 Carnival in Fernando de Noronha, highlighting themes of combating femicide and violence against women.
The Maracatu Nação Noronha festival commenced the 2026 Carnival in Fernando de Noronha on Saturday night, centering its theme around the fight against feminicide and the broader struggle against violence towards women. The performance culminated at the festivities hub in Praça São Miguel, located in the Village of Remedies. Organizers emphasized that the parade served as a tribute to women, urging society to take action against these issues.
Dora Martins Costa, the group's organizer, stated that the procession featured representations of female deities from Afro-Brazilian religions, including Iansã, Oxum, and Iemanjá, reflecting a deep cultural heritage and the calls for an end to violence against women. The strong message, "Stop killing us," was echoed during the celebration, highlighting the critical social issues that the event aimed to address while celebrating cultural traditions.
Since its inception in 2002 by cultural producer Ana Martins, also known as Dona Nanete, Maracatu Nação Noronha has garnered support from various community initiatives, including the Rotating Dolphin Project. The inclusion of a dolphin puppet in the parade symbolizes the local marine life, further tying the event to the unique identity of Fernando de Noronha. The community's engagement and positive feedback, as noted by attendees like Stefany Silva, reflect the significance of the event in promoting both cultural expression and social awareness.
