Police mobilizes Maria da Penha Patrol to operate during Carnival
The Maria da Penha Patrol is actively participating in Brazil's Carnival to promote women's safety and provide guidance on actions in cases of violence.
During the Carnival period in Rio de Janeiro, the Military Police has mobilized the Maria da Penha Patrol as part of the 'Safer Carnival 2026 - No means No! Respect the decision' initiative aimed at preventing violence against women. Over nine days, this patrol will be present at major events in the city and throughout the interior, distributing fans that contain essential information and instructions on what women should do if they become victims of violence during this festive time.
The patrol's presence will be visible at numerous Carnival events, including parades, samba school performances, and beach gatherings. In addition to providing printed materials, they encourage women to reach out for help through local emergency services by calling emergency number 190 or using the Rede Mulher app for direct assistance from female agents on-site. This proactive approach aims not only to empower women but also to highlight the importance of respect and consensuality during Carnival celebrations.
The Maria da Penha Patrol has become a national benchmark for combating violence against women in Brazil. It underscores the government's commitment to addressing this issue comprehensively by creating supportive environments where women can feel safe and empowered. The campaign's messaging and community presence reflect a broader effort to instill cultural change around standards of behavior during Carnival, aiming to reduce instances of violence and promote a safer environment for all participants.
