Bus with women's protection structure reaches over 11,000 people at SP carnival and is set to return in March, says government
During the São Paulo carnival, a mobile unit dedicated to women's protection reached over 11,000 individuals and provided direct support to 463 women, with plans to continue its efforts in March.
The government of São Paulo implemented a novel initiative during the carnival season to enhance women's safety, through a mobile unit called SP Por Todas, which offered support services at various carnival events. This initiative, which included a mobile police unit and a base from the Military Police, engaged with carnival-goers primarily at the Sambódromo and Ibirapuera Park. The program managed to connect with over 11,000 individuals and provided direct assistance to 463 women, reflecting the need for enhanced safety measures in festive contexts.
The initiative was particularly notable for its direct involvement with the community, providing immediate resources and assistance at a time when many people are attending crowded public festivities. The activities began on February 7 and concluded after carnival's main festivities at Ibirapuera Park on February 22, catering to the needs of women in a setting where their safety might be compromised. By integrating physical support structures at the carnival, the government demonstrated a commitment to tackling issues of safety and harassment faced by women in such environments.
Looking ahead, the state government plans to extend the program in March, aligning with International Women’s Month, albeit in different public venues like football stadiums rather than street celebrations. This strategy illustrates a sustained effort to prioritize women's safety beyond the carnival, ensuring continuous support and awareness regarding women's rights and protection in various communal settings throughout the year.
