Lebanon's long-distance runner Samer Tawk: 'I shouldn't actually be alive anymore'

Samer Tawk, a Lebanese long-distance runner, shares his near-fatal skiing accident experience and his journey of recovery and resilience.

Samer Tawk, originally from Bsharri in Lebanon, recounts a life-altering incident that took place on May 26, 2019, when he decided to ski in El-Arz, a renowned skiing area in the Lebanese mountains. This region is famous for its high altitudes, often providing skiable snow well into the spring, along with the historic site of the cedars, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, symbolic to Lebanese culture. During his ski trip, Tawk took a risky detour off the marked trails into treacherous terrain, which led to a severe accident where he fell 13 meters after losing sight of a precipice due to the steepness of the slope.
