Falling 14m, 9 surgeries... After 7 years, from intensive care to the Olympic slopes

Lebanese cross-country skier Samer Tauk makes a remarkable return to the Olympic stage after a near-fatal fall and extensive recovery process.

Samer Tauk, a 27-year-old cross-country skier from Lebanon, faced a life-threatening accident in May 2019 when he fell approximately 14 meters during a training session in the Lebanese mountains. Suffering from severe injuries including multiple fractures, paralysis, and internal bleeding, the prognosis for his recovery was grim. Despite the medical team's doubts about his chances of returning to a normal life, Tauk embarked on a long and arduous rehabilitation journey that has now culminated in his qualification for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo.

Over the past seven years, Tauk's road to recovery was fraught with challenges. Initially, he struggled to move more than 10 meters on skis, unable to maintain balance and frequently falling due to the weaknesses in his left leg. This situation persisted for nearly two years, requiring significant time and effort to regain his skiing skills. Despite the long-lasting effects of his injuries and the ongoing challenges he faces, Tauk remained resolute in his determination to compete at an Olympic level once again, shifting his focus from possible Paralympic participation to the Winter Olympics.

Tauk's participation in the upcoming Olympics marks his second appearance, following his debut at the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics, where he became Lebanon's first cross-country skiing competitor. Reflecting on his journey, he initially believed that he would return to normal activity within six months after the accident, but the reality proved far more difficult. He even had to attend the Beijing Olympics in a coaching capacity instead of as a competitor. Now, as he prepares to compete in the men's 10 km freestyle event, Tauk symbolizes resilience and determination in the face of overwhelming adversity, bringing hope and inspiration to athletes and fans alike.
