On Saturday, the Transport Administration of Estonia opened its second official ice road of the year to Kihnu, following improved weather conditions. This ice road extends for 12 kilometers and is accessible for vehicles weighing up to 2.5 tons. Similar to the Hiiumaa-Saaremaa route, it will only be open for traffic during daylight hours, specifically from 8:30 AM to 5 PM. The section named Lao-Kihnu starts just before the Munalaiu harbor in Pรคrnu.
To maintain safety on the ice road, strict adherence to the traffic regulations and guidelines set forth by the authorities is mandatory. The road's maintenance is managed by Verston Eesti Oร. The Transport Administration has also indicated that weather conditions could necessitate the sudden closure of the ice road, emphasizing the importance of monitoring the road conditions via their online portal, TarkTee, where current information will be updated as needed.
In addition to the Kihnu route, the Transport Administration is also set to reopen the Hiiumaa-Saaremaa crossing later in the afternoon. The opening of these ice roads is vital for ensuring connectivity during the winter months and reflects the local adaptation to seasonal changes in weather and transport needs.
