The Transport Administration opens all three official ice roads

The Transport Administration of Estonia has opened all three official ice roads for vehicles up to 2.5 tons, including the new road to Vormsi and the refurbished road between Hiiumaa and Saaremaa.

The Transport Administration in Estonia has officially launched all three designated ice roads, allowing vehicles weighing up to 2.5 tons. The recently opened road towards Vormsi is set to cater to drivers starting Sunday afternoon, while the road connecting Hiiumaa and Saaremaa has undergone necessary modifications to ensure safety, including bridge installations over cracks. The length of the Vormsi road is approximately 10 kilometers, operational daily from 8:30 AM to 5 PM during daylight hours.

In addition to the ice roads to Vormsi and between Hiiumaa and Saaremaa, an ice road to Kihnu Island has also been opened. Stretching 12 kilometers, this new route has been operational since Saturday. The public is advised to stay off unregistered ice roads for safety reasons, as conditions may lead to unexpected closures of these routes due to weather changes. Verston Estonia OÜ is responsible for maintaining these ice roads.

This initiative reflects the seasonal tradition in Estonia where ice roads facilitate transportation during winter months, providing lifelines between islands and mainland. As local communities depend on these routes for access to essential services and goods, their opening is crucial for ensuring connectivity. Continued monitoring of weather conditions remains vital to maintain the safety and integrity of these icy pathways, especially during fluctuating winter weather.
