The tourism record and the paradox of air tourism

Mexico set a new record with 47.8 million international tourists in 2025, despite a decline in average spending per tourist compared to the previous year.

According to the International Travelers Surveys from INEGI, Mexico witnessed the arrival of 47.8 million international tourists in 2025, marking a historic achievement that represents a 6.1% increase from the previous year. Furthermore, the inflow of foreign currency into the country from international tourists soared to a record high of $31.715 billion, reflecting a 4.9% increase compared to 2024. This growth in tourism is a significant contributor to the national economy, highlighting the importance of the sector as a driver of economic development.

However, despite the record number of visitors, the average spending per international tourist decreased to $664 in 2025, down by 1.2% from the previous year, indicating signs of moderation in tourist spending. The Secretary of Tourism of the Government of Mexico, Josefina Rodríguez, mentioned that December confirmed 2025 as a successful year for tourism in the country, as it welcomed 10.1 million visitors in that month alone, generating an economic spill of $3.772 billion. This paradox of record visitation paired with reduced spending raises questions about the sustainability and future trends of tourism in Mexico.

The contrasting data on tourist numbers and spending may indicate shifts in traveler behavior, where more visitors are seeking budget-friendly travel options or shorter stays. Moving forward, the Mexican tourism sector may need to adapt its strategies to enhance value for visitors while also ensuring that the economic benefits continue to grow. These findings may prompt policymakers to rethink how they attract tourists and sustain economic growth from the tourism industry.
