Public radio in Mexico needs modernization and use of AI to grow: IMER
The Mexican Institute of Radio (IMER) highlights the importance of modernizing public radio in Mexico by adopting contemporary formats and incorporating artificial intelligence to remain competitive in the digital age.
The Mexican Institute of Radio (IMER) has called for a modernization of public radio in Mexico to adapt to changing audio consumption habits and increased competition from digital platforms. During a forum titled 'The Radio that Informs, Educates, and Connects', IMER's General Director Fernando Chamizo emphasized the need for public radio to adopt contemporary formats such as podcasts to engage new audiences. He stated that transforming public radio into a contemporary idea is essential for its relevance in todayβs media landscape.
Chamizo pointed out that merely updating formats is not sufficient; there is a pressing need to create a diverse radio environment that genuinely includes all listeners. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to revitalize public radio by modernizing its approach and making it more appealing to younger demographics used to digital formats. IMER asserts that adapting to these changes will help secure public radioβs place in a competitive market driving innovation in content generation.
In addition to restructuring content formats, Chamizo noted that the implementation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) should be approached with caution. He believes that AI can provide value and improve the quality of content produced by public radio if utilized effectively. As such, the IMER is advocating for careful integration of AI tools to enhance listener engagement and operational efficiency, ensuring that public radio evolves alongside technological advancements without losing its core mission of informing and connecting the community.
