An emergency has been declared in the Raseiniai district of Lithuania due to severe weather conditions including heavy snowfall and ice, causing dangerous road situations.

In response to deteriorating weather conditions characterized by heavy snowfall, rain, and black ice, an emergency situation has been declared in the Raseiniai district of Lithuania. Mayor Arvydas Nekrošius signed an order following a meeting of the Emergency Operations Center which noted that visibility worsens and roads become treacherous due to the severe weather. The local authority is seeking additional resources from the national road administrator, "Via Lietuva", in order to handle snow removal and maintain road safety adequately.

As reported by BNS, the Lithuanian police have recorded 144 traffic incidents across the country by Friday afternoon, indicating a significant correlation between the harsh weather and driving conditions. Police spokesperson Ramūnas Matonis suggested that the true extent of accidents could be higher due to worsening conditions. Various areas are expected to continue experiencing severe weather with forecasts of snow, especially in the southeastern regions, along with anticipated rain and sleet contributing to hazardous road conditions.

The Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Service has warned that the worsening conditions would continue through the night into Saturday. The impact of the expected freezing rain and black ice is already being felt, prompting urgent calls for enhanced road safety measures. As the snowfall intensifies, special attention is needed for transportation safety in Raseiniai and surrounding regions, especially with continued forecasts of additional precipitation, necessitating a quick governmental response to protect local residents and maintain transportation standards.
