Due to black ice, the number of emergency calls has significantly increased, with the most complicated situation in Vilnius
Emergency calls in Lithuania have surged due to black ice, particularly in Vilnius, with 351 calls recorded by noon, significantly higher than the usual 250.
Emergency medical services in Lithuania have reported a significant spike in calls related to accidents caused by black ice. As of noon, 351 calls had been registered, which is approximately a third higher than the normal average of 250 calls at that time. The majority of these incidents involve injuries from slips and falls, prompting an urgent alert for residents to exercise caution when outdoors.
Tomas Bagdonas, a representative of the Emergency Medical Services, noted that not only is there an increase in calls for assistance but also in inquiries regarding where individuals injured in falls can seek treatment. This indicates that many people are experiencing injuries but are also looking for ways to manage their situation without waiting for an ambulance. The surge in calls places additional pressure on emergency services, highlighting the need for public awareness regarding the dangers of hazardous weather conditions.
The situation is particularly challenging in Vilnius, where the urban environment may exacerbate conditions that lead to accidents. The ongoing weather conditions require both governmental and community responses to ensure safety and provide support to emergency services. Officials are urging the public to take preventative measures and to be mindful of the potential risks posed by icy sidewalks and roads, stressing that personal safety should be a priority during these adverse weather conditions.
