Green car carrier received by the Grimaldi Group

The Grimaldi Group has taken a significant step towards zero-emission shipping with the delivery of the 'Grande Michigan', a new Pure Car & Truck Carrier capable of using ammonia as fuel.

The Grimaldi Group has made a notable advancement in the realm of zero-emission shipping by taking delivery of their latest vessel, 'Grande Michigan', from China Merchants Heavy Industries Jiangsu. This state-of-the-art Pure Car & Truck Carrier (PCTC) has a capacity of up to 9,000 CEU and is specially designed to be compatible with ammonia fuel, earning the Ammonia Ready certification from the Italian classification society RINA. This move reflects the company's strategic focus on developing sustainable marine transport solutions.

Equipped with a range of advanced technologies, the 'Grande Michigan' is expected to reduce fuel consumption by up to 50% compared to previous-generation car carriers. The vessel features lithium-ion batteries with a total power output of 5 MWh, enabling a cold ironing capability for zero emissions while docked. Furthermore, it is fitted with 2,500 square meters of solar panels, silicon-based coatings, and smart optimization systems, all of which underscore the Italian group's shift towards low and zero-carbon marine transportation.

As the shipping industry faces increasing pressure to adopt environmentally friendly practices, initiatives like that of Grimaldi's highlight a growing trend toward sustainability within maritime transport. The introduction of such innovative vessels marks a significant step in reducing the global shipping sector's carbon footprint, contributing to international efforts aimed at achieving greener transportation solutions.
